Skip to 1:24 for the song.
I know everyone’s been yammering on about Matt Corby for a while, but I can honestly say I hadn’t heard of him till I accidentally heard his live version of his single ‘Brother’.
I can’t say I like the EP/radio edit of the song, or any of his other songs for that matter. Too much excess noise which gets in the way of the music. Musicians seem to be so worried about padding songs to make them seem bigger and more complex than they need to be these days and I think this song is a victim of that in a big way.
Stripped back, this song is amazing. I heard the live version while driving and actually pulled over to listen to it. I can’t say I’ve ever done that before.
The passion & the control in his voice against the steady guitar is perfect.
I wish music was still like this. It’s not. If I have to listen to one more airy folk rock talking-in-monotone-instead-of-singing song where someone plays a glockenspiel like it’s going out of style, I’m going to lose my mind. Flip like a switch and lose my fucking mind. I don’t know when using electric guitars for their actual purpose became an outdated idea, but I need to go back to that time. Between the folk rock, dubstep and screechy female popstars, I don’t know how anybody listens to the radio anymore.
Maybe I’m just getting old. But I wish music was about music. Not skin-tight lycra, knicking rhymes off 5 year olds and being able to program beeps in a musical sounding pattern. Sigh.
Till then, this will ease my current angst.
